The paintings of Niels Egidius often depict romantic worlds in between dream and reality. By using unpredictable, fantastic and often symbolic details he tries to challenge the viewer to immerse himself in the image and unravel what is really happening.
According to Niels a painting should suggest that there’s something going on, about to happen or has just happened. This makes you constantly wonder if the scene you are looking at is really what it seems to be. In this way Niels creates a sense of liveliness, as if you are a part of the scene that is unfolding in front of you. He sees his paintings literally as windows or portals to another world or time.
In the images you can find references to art history and contemporary culture. Niels works with themes such as Romanticism, Orientalism and mythological stories but also uses observations form daily life and nature.
