In his illustrations Niels often works with a tropical theme. Drawing has always been a way to dream about places he has never visited. In them he can make the impossible possible. But Niels is equally fascinated by scenes from his daily life. He feels like a film director when he draws. He sees the paper as a blank filmstrip that has to be filled with stories and colours. Niels works in a variety of analogue and often surprising techniques and media, making him an unique voice in the illustration world.

As an illustrator Niels sets himself to the test of presenting a concept or to communicate a message in his own unique style. In the past he has done this for a number of clients such as Dutch Design Week, De Optimist, Hard//hoofd, Tijdschrift Ei and bands like Charlie & the Lesbians and the Mandolin Sisters.
