In his works on paper Niels often works with a tropical theme. Drawing has always been a way to dream about places he has never visited. In them he can make the impossible possible. He feels like a film director when he draws. Niels works in a variety of analogue and often surprising techniques and media.
He collects inspiration for his works on paper in everyday life. Niels likes to wander on his own, following his curiosity and chasing daily life’s beauty and oddities. Being out in the streets or in nature often feels like playing outside for him. He observes the world passing by in a hurry while he is doing something close to… nothing.
Taking photos of the things he encounters in daily life feels like taking home souvenirs that can be translated into drawings. Over the years Niels has created an archive of these images. By reworking them he tries to create new connections and associations between them. They often start as loose ideas that slowly develop into series. It is only then that they starts to make more sense or form a narrative.
